Meet the Artist

Ashley Franklin is a self-taught artist born and raised in the vibrant and historic Bronzeville neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side. Her work is a heartfelt reflection of her roots and lived experiences. Deeply influenced by the rich cultural tapestry of her community and the unique perspective of growing up as a young Black girl. Her art beautifully weaves together elements of contemporary and abstract styles to tell stories that are both personal and universal.

Her artistic journey is grounded in a legacy of creativity that spans generations. With grandparents and parents who also grew up in Bronzeville, the neighborhood’s deep cultural history and creative spirit have long been part of her family’s story. Her grandmother—an oil painter and artist—was a guiding influence, planting the seed of artistic curiosity late in her life. Surrounded by the creative energy of her parents and siblings, she was raised in an environment where self-expression was nurtured and celebrated. It’s through this rich blend of heritage, family, and community that her artistic voice continues to grow and evolve.

Now, as she continues to explore and expand the boundaries of her creativity, she is passionate about using her talents to inspire and uplift future generations. Through her work, she hopes to create space for others to see themselves, embrace their own stories, and find power in artistic expression—just as she did.
